Ever since Akiko and I determined to make this Skype exchange happen regardless of all the hurdles ahead of us this September, we have been doing “collaborative lesson planning” through Skype many times. Besides our passion and dedication for this project, the idea is that we need to come up with workable lesson plans, worksheets and other materials to meet the goal of effective communication between both sides.

台日英語視訊交流
The purpose of learning a language is about not only how to get good grades on written tests but how to communicate with it in an authentic context. With the help of technology, now we can create such an environment for students to apply what they’ve learned from textbooks to communicating with their Japanese counterparts without leaving the country.

國際教育在臺中--毛利文化 International Education in Taichung
On Oct. 30th, Ngati Tawhaki Maori Teenager Culture Delegation came to Taichung and had classes with junior high school students. In class, students introduced Taiwan to Maoris and discussed how Maoris preserve their culture.

Topic:桌遊融入英語教學
The combination
between English sentence pattern teaching and board games make English classes
more energetic and interesting. Sherry designs a variety of English board games
for students. In class, students can work in pairs or in groups with hand-made
board game materials. On Oct. 20th, Sherry shared her teaching materials and
useful online resources with other junior high English teachers in Taichung and
showed them how to teach tag question and active/passive sentence patterns via
board games. It was an inspiring and delightful afternoon for the teachers.

Doing a teaching demonstration at a school located in a relatively remote area in Changhwa County, I devised some tasks targeting strategies like making predictions, wording meaning in context, making inferences and so on. All in all, the activities worked well to serve their purpose, which is to help students be a more active reader and comprehend a given text in group work.

Show and Tell and Hot Seat
Show and Tell has
been one of my favorites because students get to introduce whatever they like
in English, like their favorite comic books, novels and even video games. To do
this right, students have to develop a draft for their oral presentation first,
so writing skills are also involved. Next, during presentations, they need to
pay attention in order to answer my questions about what just has been said.
Thus, listening comprehension is incorporated as well. Prior to that, teacher’s
demonstration is necessary because students will have a model to follow in
terms of eye contact, volume, organization and so on. On top of that, I also
showed my students how to use rubrics to examine each other’s performances so
that they can do a better job next time.

A Tour to Morrison Academy Taichung
On behalf of the Education Bureau, Principal Syu, Daniel and I went to
the Morrison Academy this afternoon to visit Mr. Myburgh, the Elementary/Middle
School Principal, and discussed some future cooperation plans between both
parties in cultural and English teaching exchange. After briefing him on how
the English Advisory Group of Taichung City promotes English teachers’
professional development, he immediately recommended some of the teachers there
based on their expertise to do teaching demonstrations, like cooperative
learning, flipped classroom and so on, for our visit next time as the first
step. Then, Judy kindly gave us a campus tour and introduced some teachers for
us as well. As the main event organizer, I especially would like to tap into
resources from this school for some potential workshops.

Board Game Workshop at
Houli Junior High School
I
love board games. I designed some board games which I used in my class, and
which my students had fun with. I also played them with other teachers from
Houli Junior High School this Tuesday afternoon. I felt happy to be invited and
was pleased to share the board game ideas with these friendly, active, kind, and
hardworking teachers. I was glad they thought my board games were useful and

April 29th, Benjamin, who’s from Germany, came to Taichung to give a
speech with the junior high students in Taichung. Benjamin, who’s multilingual,
shared his experiences living in different countries and his ideas of global
citizens. The influence he gave the students was very positive.
國際教育在臺中—非洲肯亞舊鞋救命活動 From Taichung to Kenya! A pair of shoes is a gift saving his life.
目標:1.立足台灣,將愛心化為實踐的力量,連結地球另一端孩子的生命。
2.找到能看見肯亞同胞需要、感同身受、樂意付出的愛心伙伴。
3.實踐計畫並存留所有積極付出愛心的美好印記。
愛心,是台灣所擁有無形的資產和最為人稱道的國家特色─而愛心特質的核心就是感同身受之後的行動─舊鞋救命計畫是一個真正激盪許多國高中參與的愛心接力賽(參與學校目前有新興國中、華僑中學、蘭陽女中、南榮國中、至善國中、蘇澳海事、員林家商……)。臺中市「至善國中鞋進肯亞計畫」是這個感同身受的愛心接力賽的一員,2015年3/20-3/25募得近20萬雙鞋子!4/25更召集逢甲大學和至善國中學生,以及許多來自中部的志工,完成所有打包、裝箱和上貨櫃動作,讓滿滿的愛心準備運送到非洲肯亞。
學校老師也藉由活動的進行,引導學生意識到身為地球的一員,如何以一己之力讓世界更美好。參考課程設計如下:

紐西蘭奧克蘭博物館員臺中參訪團 (Auckland Museum)
In 2015, Branda and Johnny from Auckland Museum in New Zealand came to Taichung Chih Shan junior high school. Their visit brought students a great international experience and promote students’ visit to Auckland, New Zealand in the near future.
紐西蘭毛利人教育參訪團--紐西蘭塔瑪奇哈瑞基舞團
In October 2014, Tamaki Hauraki Kowhao Rau from New Zealand visited Taichung junior
high school. During the one-day visit, the Maoris taught students traditional
Maori dance and the students show the Maoris Chinese martial arts. During the
activity, students not only had the chance to speak English but learned how to
introduce the beauty of Taichung to foreigners.

103學年度臺中市國中國際沙龍活動(二)
On April 27th, Chih Shan Junior High invited college students from foreign countries to the school to share their cultures and traveling experiences with the students. Stephanie from Ireland talked about the literature, music, sports, typically Irish things (like Claddagh ring and Celtic Crosses), food, drinks and some festivals (like St. Patrick’s Day) in Ireland. Pureum and Ms. Shin from Korea introduced Korean culture in Mandarin, which impressed students a lot. After the speech, the students hope that one day they have the chance to visit Ireland and Korea in person.

Microteaching with TBL and Cooperative Learning
This is the second time that I got invited and share Cooperative Learning here. Actually, it didn't go very well last time. The participants were comprised of a variety of subject teachers, which made it difficult for most of them to understand what I was talking about because the presentation was made in English. On top of that, I lectured throughout the entire workshop.

103學年度臺中市國中國際沙龍活動(一)
本學年度臺中市至善國中和逢甲大學國際志工社合作,邀請逢甲大學外籍生到國中和學生分享該國文化和該生生活經驗,讓學生有機會和外國人面對面接觸,拓展國際視野。
本次活動邀請來自德國的Fabian和美國的Vivian和學生進行一堂課的交流,學生們可以藉此機會和外籍生利用英文進行溝通,並和外籍生就文化議題上,進行討論,學生收穫良多,不僅有機會真實運用英文,更增廣見聞,加強學生學習外語動機。
