The combination between English sentence pattern teaching and board games make English classes more energetic and interesting. Sherry designs a variety of English board games for students. In class, students can work in pairs or in groups with hand-made board game materials. On Oct. 20th, Sherry shared her teaching materials and useful online resources with other junior high English teachers in Taichung and showed them how to teach tag question and active/passive sentence patterns via board games. It was an inspiring and delightful afternoon for the teachers.

Topic: Fresh Salad Competition

Learning by doing. Teachers in Taichung municipal Focus junior high school hold a competition for students. In the competition, students learn how to design their own salad recipe and make salad by themselves in English classes. Students have to write down their salad ingredients and making steps in English and learn how to cooperate with other group members.

Topic: 台德文化交流課程

Have you ever heard of AIESEC? Schools in Taiwan can apply for volunteers of AIESEC from other countries to share their cultures and life experiences with students. Each volunteer would stay at a school for about 3 weeks and interact with students face to face. The teacher from Shi Yuan high school reported the cooperating experiences with a volunteer from Germany.

Topic: Incorporating Technology and Local Cultures to Motivate Students’ English Learning

Google Map can be used not only for location searching but also in English classes. I-Ling, an English teacher in Taichung Shen Gang junior high school, incorporated Google Map and local cultures to motivate students’ English learning. Students learned how to ask and give directions with Google Map and tried to recommend two famous bakeries, Leechi and Kunpai, in English to foreigners. The combination of technology and authentic materials was a big hit.

Language learning doesn’t happen just in classes, but in daily life. Teachers in Shen Zun junior high school try to create an English learning environment on campus. Students become DJs to broadcast news and English songs in English. Moreover, students are encouraged to read English magazines and watch English programs at school. English learning becomes part of students’ life.
