A Workshop on Language Testing and Assessment
About the Instructor
1. MASTER OF EDUCATION, UNIVERSITY OF WARWICK
2. IN-SERVICE ENGLISH TEACHER AT WEN CHANG JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN TAOYUAN CITY
It is our honor to invite Jojo Huang, a researcher at National English Advisory Team, talking about Language Testing and Item Analysis on CAP. Her lecture could be divided into four main categories. They are curriculum of reading competency, types of questions, strategy teaching, and inquiry-based learning.
As English teachers, what we need to do is to be familiar with Curriculum Guidelines of 12-Year Basic Education on reading part if we want to assist our students in preparing reading ability test at CAP. Jojo mentioned that we TESOL practitioners need to equip our students with the ability to identify different genres. Take Narration for example, it is vital for us to teach our students the structure of narration, setting and characters, rising action, climax, falling action, and denouement included. Also, when it comes to Exposition, knowing the author's perspective, attitude, and the purpose of writing is paramount.
Furthermore, in order to foster students to become readers with critical thinking skills, differentiate facts from opinions is so important.
At last, backward design is a fantastic strategy for teachers to use if we want to teach our students reading strategies. There are three steps in it. Firstly, we need to identify desired results. Secondly, just determine acceptable evidence. Lastly, plan meaningful learning activities.
Thank Jojo for sharing her brilliant ideas on reading teaching and language testing. We English teachers should teach reading strategies through the previous test question on CAP, which is efficient and effective.

A Seminar on Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning
About the instructor:
1. Bachelor
in TESOL, National Taiwan Normal University
2. Researcher at English Education Resource Center
3. In-service English Teacher at Taipei First Girls High School
It
is our pleasure to invite Ruth Yeh, an in-service English teacher at Taipei First Girls High School, sharing a number of useful applications related to English teaching and learning with TESOL practitioners in Taichung today. This is a heated issue since online teaching has become an ordinary thing for all teachers all over the world. Therefore, we English teachers need to equip ourselves with the miscellaneous skills on applying technology to English teaching.
At the beginning of the speech, Ruth introduced Word Search and Bingo Baker for English teachers to use when we want to have a test or practice on vocabulary as a warm-up. They are quite user-friendly and teachers can generate word puzzles and bingo cards with ease.
Also, Ruth mentioned that Google Art and Culture can be fantastic materials if we English teachers are eager to get to know more about the background knowledge of various topics. Take holocaust for example, we can find a lot of cherished photographs associated with Anne Frank, which are vivid and prized. All of the information could be combined with Google Jamboard to add colors to our English classroom.
Lastly, Google Docs is definitely the most powerful tool for students to cooperate with each other to learn English through co-editing.

Ruth's lecture was quite informative and useful. We hope that we English teachers can put the information into practice. In this way, we can have wonderful English classes.

Seminar on Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)
About the Instructor
1. Bachelor in Chemistry, University of Manchester
2. In-service International Teacher at Donshang Senior High school
It is our pleasure to invite Ian Garner, the head coordinator of Taichung FET program, talking about CLIL curriculum design today. His presentation is informative and vivid, which is so useful for TESOL practitioners who want to create their own CLIL curriculum. I would like to summarize a few key points in the following section.
First of all, we English teachers should not be confined by textbooks since they are not authentic at all. Try to implement something authentic in the alternative curriculum (彈性課程). In Taiwan, we are so used to teaching the materials in the textbooks, which is easy and time-saving. However, we fail to recognize that English is taken for communication instead of language tests.
Second of all, try to be good friends with the General Guidelines provided by MOE in order to get to know more about the beliefs and goals of it. General Guidelines are so important when we want to make the lesson plans because they could help us pinpoint what to teach (from the perspective of teachers) and what to learn (from the perspective of students).
Last of all, work with your colleagues to design CLIL curriculum. Also, when encountering some difficulties, refer to the guidelines in inner circle of English would help.
It takes a lot of time to create CLIL curriculum. But if you finish one, you will feel that you become a super teacher in the field of English teaching because you teach not only English but also other subjects.
