This tenth teaching demonstration of mine was performed at MingjianJunior High School on May 21. By the request of the event planner, the main idea was to create opportunities for students to USE English and to showcase how activities can be set up also using the language as well. In other words, it was more like an English camp, which I was given total freedom to decide on what to teach and enjoyed watching students busy applying what they've learned from textbooks. Teaching procedures are stated as bold and highlighted:
I’ve been thinking about how to create a more authentic environment for my students to use the language. Today, two student volunteers from Holland and Australia, Noel and Chelsea, helped a lot with both language practice and cultural exchange. Working in groups, my students did a little presentation about windmills, floating houses, bicycles and the Anne Frank House in Holland.
It is my honor and pleasure today to film for the “Teaching Demonstration Project” with the National Changhua University of Education. The idea is to demonstrate some innovative teaching strategies targeting reading and grammar in textbooks for all the junior high English teachers. On top of that, it is also my privilege to work with those lovely students in雅心書軒for the very first time after its unveiling ceremony at PHJH.
Teaching Demonstration at HKJH: Receiving warm welcome and positive feedback from the teachers, this is exactly the driving force that keeps me going no matter what. On top of that, students were engaged and really using the language throughout the whole class.
With Lesson 6 already covered by the original teacher, this class is aimed at demonstrating how incorporating authentic application of the language and some cooperative learning activity techniques can help motivate and engage students with intriguing learning tasks.
When I have to introduce myself, I would usually say that I’m a crazy English learner. Indeed, I seldom allow my mind to go wander. When doing household chores, running on a treadmill or even taking a dump on the toilet, I must be listening to some English. On top of that, I’ll always have an English magazine with me, picking up useful expressions anytime and anywhere. Getting a lot of input intensively and extensively is how I maintain my level of English proficiency.
This time, I
worked even harder on reading up as much as I can about reading strategies and
putting all the resources together in order to create a complete lesson plan of
microteaching mainly targeting important skills that help bolster reading
comprehension. Once again, I feel thankful for the opportunity to not only
benefit the participants of the workshop but more importantly, myself, in terms
of self-growth.
