2012 Summer TEFL Delegation Taichung Taiwan

A delegation of eleven teachers of Taichung City went to San Diego University State University for a four-week TEFL program, or Teaching English as a Foreign Language, this summer. Not only did they improve themselves in terms of English competence and teaching effectiveness, they also represented Taichung and actively participated in many activities, like paying a visit to the Speaker of the City Council, to enhance the relationship between these two sister cities.

【小活動】Matching Game



▲ Matching game。

這次在教完 if 條件句的句型後,做了一個小活動,就是『配對』遊戲。

本來想把它跟 iPad 結合,不過找不到適合的 app 可以用,

所以最後就回歸傳統(傳統也沒什麼不好啊)

教學步驟:

這一次嘗試將 graphic organizer 用在課本的對話上。

這一篇對話比較不具故事性,所以看看學生能玩出什麼火花?

教學步驟:

01. 播放對話內容,學生聽完後立即分組共讀與整理,時間約10分鐘(老師不做任何課文講解)。

02. 收回各組的成果。展示以及分享優良的作品,並給予全組加分。



▲ 短短10分鐘即有驚人的產出,十分厲害!




03. 老師藉由分享優良作品即可開始做內容講解。

04. 對話講解完畢後,先讓小組做對話練習,再做分組演示。

05. 指派回家作業。全班每個人將對話內容重新整理後繳交。

小省思:

Talking Tom 很有趣,不過有錄音時間的限制。

而且,聲音經過變調處理,不易辨別發音是否正確,娛樂性質大於教學實用性。

【升級】My iPad Classroom




原本以為只是一場年度大拜拜的輔導員研習,

卻意外出現一個令人驚艷的『亮點』。

於是回到學校後,趕緊爬文做功課,看看能不能把現在的教室也來做個『升級』!

雖然不能說是無痛升級,不過,升級並沒有想像中的那麼難,

這就來跟大家分享 iPad Classroom 的升級過程吧。

教室原本就配有班級電腦,單槍投影機以及電子白板,

所以,問題在於如何把 iPad 的畫面投射在電子白板上?



03 ▲ Key words:AirSever & wifi。

要把 iPad 的畫面顯示在白板上,

最重要的兩項道具就是『AirSever』軟體以及無線網路環境。



04 ▲ 下載 AirSever 軟體。

首先,先到這兒(http://www.airserverapp.com/zh/Download)

下載 AirSever 軟體到班級電腦裡。

AirSever 有分 Mac 版和 PC 版。

因為 Leo 這間教室電腦用的是 windows 系統,所以下載的是 PC 版。

這是一個付費軟體,不過可以用 e-mail 帳號下載七天免費試用版。

填寫 e-mail 後,系統會發一封認證信到信箱,

再到信箱裡點擊連結下載 AirSever 程式到班級電腦裡即可。



05 ▲ 安裝。

安裝後用 e-mail 即可啟動 AirSever 程式。

不過,Leo 卻在這兒遇到『大魔王』!

Leo 在啟動 AirSever 時,都會跳出這個視窗,導致程式無法正常運作。

Leo 雖然看不懂這個訊息,也不知道如何處理。

不過...


07 ▲ 孤狗大神!

邪不勝正啊!孤狗大神一出,魔王就嚇得自動退散了!

如果看倌在安裝時也碰到這個大魔王,請服用以下這一帖藥方。

08 ▲ AirSever 啟動。

大魔王退散後,AirSever 就順利運作了。

接著,讓班級電腦以及 iPad 連上同一個無線網路。

因為 Leo 這間教室沒有無線網路,所以用 3G 網卡頂著先。

連上無線網路後,接著就啟動 iPad 的 AirPlay功能。

(連按兩次 Home 鍵,再往左划到底就可以看見了)

選擇班級電腦,啟用鏡像輸出。

iPad 的畫面成功出現在 PC 螢幕上了!

因為 PC 接著單槍投影機,所以 iPad 畫面自然就可以投影到大螢幕上囉!

我終於可以不用因為使用電子白板的關係而被『釘』在講台上了!

不僅可以在教室裡『啪啪造』,而且可以利用豐富的 app 讓上課變得更有趣(希望是這樣啦)。

【節慶】Halloween Paper Pumpkin

藉由臉書上的老師分享,得知有這麼一個好活動,

自己在家裡試做之後覺得挺不錯的,而且不會佔用太多上課時間,

因此,臨時安插這一個活動,應景一下。

教學前準備:

》準備材料。

(因為只有一節課的時間,因此事先將紙裁剪好,可以節省一點學生在課堂上剪紙的時間)

》準備學習單。

上 craft club 官網,將步驟製成一張學習單讓學生參考。

實施步驟:

1. 學生按照分組座位就坐。

2. 發下材料及學習單。

3. 觀看教學影片。

4. 開工。

製作過程不難,所以不用老師給太多的指導,

學生彼此就會互相幫忙。

Leo 的工作只是不斷遊走在各組之間,拍照,讚美,

好好欣賞學生所發揮的無限創意!

小反省:

◆ 一節課真的不夠,兩節課的時間應該比較剛好。

◆ 時間充裕點的話,還可以帶一點認識單字以及文體的活動。

First of all, on behalf of the Group and all the participants at the workshop, I want to thank all the staff from GJJH(光正國中) for providing us such a wonderful venue and technical support. Also, all the presenters today have well prepared and shared their practices in terms of innovative English teachingbenefiting over seventy English today teachers with thought-provoking insights and teaching techniques.

101年度英語讀者劇場比賽

成績表

A total of fifty six junior high schools participated in the Readers Theater Competition in Taichung Dadun Cultural Center of the year 2012, featuring wonderful and outstanding performances by dedicated contestants and their coaches. Some high-ranking officials, legislators and principles came and graced this main event, also with the vice mayor addressing to the audience. He encouraged all the students to keep working on their reading and speaking competence and expressed his best wishes that each team could have a wonderful learning experience.

英文領域補救教學師資研習




Remedial teaching has been considered one of the major key elements to the success of the Twelve-Year Compulsory Education, as a result, many workshops regarding directly to this topic are expected to be held from now on. According to the Ministry of Education, every in-service teacher should get at least eight hour’s training on this issue in the following three years, for we are held responsible for the first degree remedial teaching right in the classroom. Today, we were honored to have two experienced speakers to share theories and teaching practices respectively in terms of remedial teaching.

101學年度分區到校輔導-B組



A total of eighty public junior high schools are divided into six groups so that teachers from neighboring ones can attend the workshop. The workshop is held to create an opportunity for English teachers to exchange teaching ideas and practices. Thus, all the participants can reflect on their own and gain some novel strategies to incorporate in their class. Those who are assigned to share their work at the workshop will have to organize their thoughts and prepare their PowerPoint slides in advance.

The convention that promotes important English education policies with regard to scheduled events for the following semester was held in Yu-Ying Junior High School today, with a total of eighty English teachers who are going to help Taichung City fulfill those requirements attending this meeting. Gloria Lin (林秀慧), who specializes in planning and organizing for the English Advisory Group, first gave a brief introduction to the job description of the Group so that all the participants can have a basic understanding of what to expect from the Group. Thus, all the members of the Group will provide our service when any of the teachers applies.

2012 TESOL Training Program at Queensland University of Technology







Week One

I used to think studying abroad was a dream which was impossible for me to realize because I took on huge responsibility as a husband and a father of two, and I couldn’t just abandon my family and my job only for my own dream. A couple of years ago, some colleges of mine decided to pursue their master’s degree in the United Kingdom, which made me so jelous. Therefore, when I learned the Ministry of Education was going to subsidize English teachers to study in Australia for five weeks, I immediately knew this was a great opportunity to fulfill my “unfinished business”, so I tried hard to get myself accepted. Now, here I am in Brisbane, studying TESOL with so many amazing English teachers all over Taiwan in such a beautiful country, Australia.

國中小聯合團務會議


A joint committee is organized by the Advisory Group, and both members of the Elementary and Junior High subgroups meet on a regular basis to have a professional discussion about the current teaching practices between these two stages. The main idea of this meeting is for all the members to have a chance of exchanging teaching ideas and techniques regarding some of the frequently asked questions, like the Bipolar Distribution phenomenon, Remedial Teaching, Multiple Assessment, the Washback Effect, etc, that we usually encounter when meeting teachers on the front line.
