Remedial teaching has been considered one of the
major key elements to the success of the Twelve-Year Compulsory Education, as a
result, many workshops regarding directly to this topic are expected to be held
from now on. According to the Ministry of Education, every in-service teacher
should get at least eight hour’s training on this issue in the following three
years, for we are held responsible for the first degree remedial teaching right
in the classroom. Today, we were honored to have two experienced speakers to
share theories and teaching practices respectively in terms of remedial
teaching.
First of all, we have to be able to understand
why some students are so much falling behind and how we can identify those who
really need remedial teaching. Competence, studying strategies and motivation
are crucial to the learning effectiveness of students. If they decide to give
up on themselves, he or she will go through mental struggles, such as rage,
despair and apathy. Then, even if they want to learn later on, lack of learning
strategies can also be in their way. Therefore, pinpointing those students and
providing them extra resources to help them learn better is the whole idea of
remedial teaching. With the help of online diagnostic tests like ASAP, not only
can we know who needs help but what their learning problems are individually.
Following that, some principles, teaching
techniques and online resources were recommended. In terms of English learning,
those who have trouble with pronunciation, spelling, word recognition, phonics,
etc, usually cannot learn English well. Teachers are advised to adopt a variety
of teaching skills to cater for the needs with different learning styles. Authentic
materials, like English songs, road signs, leaflets and son on, can arouse
their interest of learning. Also, hands-on tasks can help create opportunities
for students to apply what they learned. We can find that there are already
abundant teaching resources online for us to incorporate in our classrooms,
such as 教育部國民中小學補救教學資源平台, 高雄市攜手計畫英語文補救教材, 基隆市診斷式線上測驗, to
name just a few.
Now, the MOE and some dedicated teachers are
working on “the Basic Learning Materials”, served as a passing mark that all
students have to master. Based on the drafts, they are made up of sixty six
commonly used sentences, thirty five grammatical patterns, three hundred and
forty words and phrases, phonics, etc, and teaching materials are also under
way, with interesting illustrations, workbooks and so on. The MOE encourages
all teachers to make learning interesting and get more students to succeed. Teaching
students learning strategies is already proved effective in enhancing students’
academic performances.
