[3-1-1]輔導員公開課 Teaching Demonstration Filming Project of NCUE: Superlatives and Simple Past



It's been the second time to work with The College of Extension Education of National Changhua University of Education, NCUE, on this filming project for my third and fourth English teaching videos. The main idea is that English teachers can learn and benefit from the videos of this project online as part of the in-service training program of the Ministry of Education. These two dedicated videos of "Superlatives" and "Simple Past" were demonstrated with a variety of activities based on the principles of Task Based Learning, which emphasizing the meaningful application of the language in a context.


Activities like discussion, dictation, prediction, phrase match, board game, and graphic organizers were introduced to help students comprehend the text and grasp the main idea better. Students were actively engaged in those tasks that required them to perform their language skills collaboratively instead of only focusing on those mechanical drills in the textbook. On top of that, to embody the main idea of Flipped Classroom, I made a video of how to use simple past with screen capture software, Open Broadcaster System, so that students can watch it at their own learning pace.

This class is aimed at demonstrating how incorporating reading tasks with Tasked Based Leaning and some Cooperative Learning techniques can help motivate and engage most of the students in terms of reading comprehension strategies.

I. Pre-Task
Objective 1: With the pictures of five national flags shown on the PPT slide, students are able to discuss what they might have in common with each other and write it down on the boards collaboratively.

Objective4: With PPT slides containing key words from the text, students are able to identify irrelevent words correctly by hammering them based on their previous predictions.

This class is aimed at demonstrating how incorporating intriguing tasks with Tasked Based Leaning and some Cooperative Learning techniques can help motivate and engage students to master simple past. 

I. Pre-Task
Objective 1: With the video about the use of simple past made by the presenter, students are able to fully comprehend and grasp the idea of how to use simple past properly.

Objective 4: With each group of four given a set of time expression cards and verb cards, students then take it in turns to turn over a time expression card and make a true past simple sentence about themselves using one of their verb cards and the time expression.

III. Post-Task
Objective 5: With the learning together technique, students are able to review all the important ideas about simple past collaboratively and answer the questions on the quiz individually.
