teaching refers to the assistance offered to the pupils who function at a lower
than the average level. The purpose of
remedial teaching is to provide slow learners with the necessary guidance to
help them overcome their difficulties in learning, and it’s been a must in the
compulsory education in Taiwan. In order to help teachers understand what the
remedial teaching is and how it functions in the classroom, a workshop hosted
by Glory Chuang (莊惠如), the counselor from the advisory group of MOE (Ministry of Education), was held in Yu Ying (育英)Junior High School on April 3, 2012.
In order
to make the teachers have a clear idea of the remedial teaching, the lecturer,
Ms. Chuang, designed the course in the mode of the remedial teaching. First, a pre-test was taken before her speech
by all the participants in the workshop to check how much they knew about the remedial
teaching. Then, various teaching
activities, including the group discussion, lecture, and games, were applied to
enhance teachers’ understanding about the remedial teaching. After that, a post-test was given, and the
result showed that most of the participants had a remarkable progress, which
means this remedial course designed by Ms. Chuang is helpful and workable for
the participants in this workshop.
In the
second half of this seminar, the participants worked in groups to design a
lesson plan on the given topic for the students in the remedial class. Although the time and the resource were quite
limited, the lesson plans proposed by each group were very impressive and
satisfying. Undoubtedly, all the
participants in this workshop are capable of being the best navigators to help
those slow learners make improvements in learning English.
