   The last activity held by the Advisory Group this year was to take a number of teachers to pay a visit to Yingpei English Village in Nantou County, hoping to gain a more vivid understanding of what Yingpei Junior High School boasts for reference. We were all deeply inspired by the dedicated and professional briefing and instructions of the principal and staff.

To begin with, Cicely Meng noted the importance of intercultural knowledge and awareness in terms of teaching English in a more creative way. By providing many interesting comparisons of expressions from different English-speaking countries, teachers were gradually aware that a more effective teaching can be accomplished through incorporating authentic materials with ready-made textbooks, arousing students’ awareness of diverse cultures. Also, teachers were encouraged to perform a hands-on activity designing their own business card as a glimpse of creative teaching.

Today, a very special workshop hosted by Wu Chi Junior High School at Taichung English＆Art Museum（台中兒童藝術館）gave us such a wonderful opportunity to broaden our horizons of the world, illustrating English, imagination and determination as the driving forces to make educational globalization possible.

A number of English villages have popped up all over the island in only a couple of years, and even more of them are now under way. As a member of the Advisory Group, I was given many opportunities to visit several of them, like the ones in Taoyuan, Mialoi, Yunlin and Kaohsiung. Through their English-speaking environment, I was able to see how they made use of native speakers and all sorts of resources to boost young English learners’ interest to learn the language in a more authentic way.

The very first English Singing Contest was taking place in Chu Jen Junior High school on November 15^th, a total of 40 schools, even including Li Shan Junior High School,  participating this main event, featuring a marvelous music feast for the audience to enjoy.

Today, teachers from junior high schools attended a workshop for a simple introduction to Tumblebooks, a well-eastablished collection of English picture books, at Jhong Hua Elementary School. The Education Bureau is planning to promote the use of Tumblebooks in junior high while all elementary schools in Taichung City have already benefited from it for almost two years, proving it a very resourceful and motivational learning materials other than ordinary textbooks.

First of all, I would like to appreciate that Hiang Shang Junior High School has provided such a comfortable environment for teachers to do their presentations. Of course, also thanks to the full preparation of the speakers, we could have such a wonderful afternoon and gain something insightful with various creative teaching ideas and practices. And, I also selected some video clips regarding human rights, a hot topic required by the MOE to be incorporated into all subjects of teaching. Now, the following is a summary of their spectacular presentations:

Today’s presentations were slightly different because speakers needed to incorporate the issue, “Human Rights”, in their demonstrations by request. Also, the director in charge of this issue provided some basic framework, along with ideas on how to combine English teaching with it. RT劇本創作工作坊

Readers Theater, or RT, has been gaining popularity all around the island these years, and Taichung City also encourages English teachers to adopt it as a teaching strategy in the classrooms, helping integrate reading comprehension and speaking skills. Therefore, the RT Competition is meant to provide such a good opportunity for both teachers and the English learners to keep on improving themselves.

This was the very first major meeting after the merger of Greater Taichung City, and most representatives from a total of eighty public junior high schools got together in the conference room of YuYing Junior High School. Teachers were handed out a new schedule for this semester, and questions raised by them were properly discussed and promptly answered at today’s gathering. The principal first opened this meeting by welcoming all the English teachers, especially those who really had to come far away from a great distance, and then immediately began the agenda.
