Topic:  Apply Extensive Reading To Junior High School

Is it possible that you squeeze your routine class and have your students experience authentic English reading, like a novel?
Yes, it is!

Extensive reading might be time consuming, but it is worth of trying. However, before doing so, it is suggested to have students practice some basic reading strategies, such as to guess the contextual meaning without looking up it in the dictionary, to scan for the main idea without reading in detail, and so on. Once students get used to what they have to do , they feel safe. Once they feel safe, they are willing to learn. In today's sharing, we can see different levels of extensive reading course design.

Topic: Where Are You From?

This is a very well designed lesson plan based on Unit 3 康軒版Book 1. From grammar patterns (Pivot Grammar), peer evaluation, reading strategies(5W1H) and comprehension, using songs(We are the world / Hand in hand) to the creation of RT scripts, Mr. Lin integrated everything in an English lesson along with the global issue. All 6 periods can be applied respectively, or as a whole.

Topic: 語文資優班 翻轉課程

We always hope that one day students are able to apply what they learn from our class in daily lives. Therefore, we keep designing the so called authentic learning situations and hope they might appreciate them. However, this is not real. Real situation doesn't need created, but experience. Have your students talk to the boss of a pizza shop or help them experience the social welfare policy, like Ubike in Taipei or ibike in Taichung. When they come back from these neighborhood, they would be happy to share what they have experienced. Learning by doing, but not imaging.

Topic: 暑期主題課程實施

Well, summer vacation is never a real vacation for students in Taiwan because they still have to spend a whole day sitting in the classroom and learn. However, if the learning is more like having fun in a summer camp, how about that? In this summer camp, students learn English, but in a very different way. English teachers teach English, but they cooperate teaching with music and art teachers. In only 9 hours, all the students stand on the stage sing and act. What a magic!

Topic: 影片融入英語教學

It is definitely not easy to have students go around the world and experience foreign lives, but it is possible to have them sit together and appreciate different culture by watching movies. Furthermore, what they learned about geography and history in different countries now becomes the best tool to help understand other countries. Languages are media for getting to know something we don't know; therefore, by sharing, students also learn how to respect what they have and what they are not familiar with at the same time.

Feedback:
1. How to combine English learning with true life is always the big issue. It is very good for the teachers to bring students to dig into their neighborhood and represent what they learn for their interaction with their neighbors.
2. A well organized lesson plan helps develop not only clear goals and objectives for teaching and learning, but also the sequence or order of practices and activities.
3. The result of students' learning is not necessary to be how many blanks have been filled in in a work sheet. There should be many other ways to evaluate their learning process and results.
4. If every member at school works together to support course design and practice, the efficiency must be stronger and higher!
